Soil testing is a set of various chemical processes that determine the amount of available plant nutrients in the soil, but also the chemical, physical and biological soil properties important for plant nutrition, or “soil health”. Chemical soil testing determines the content of basic plant nutrients; nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P2O5), potassium (K 2 O), pH, humus content, total CaCO3, available lime, organic matter, total sulphur (S), trace elements, and other physical characteristics (capacity, permeability, density, pH – value). Soil testing processes involves: i. Taking soil samples, ii. Laboratory analysis of samples and iii. The interpretation of the results by the issuance of fertilizer recommendation. The importance of this soil testing is to know the previous fertilizer and lime applied, the cropping history, • nutrient contents of the parent materials, and losses of surface soil through erosion. Soil testing had its beginnings sometimes after the acceptance of the mineral theory of plant nutrition. In its broadest sense soil testing includes a thorough inventory of the soil properties including primary and secondary minerals, particle size, exchange capacity and adsorbed cat ions, organic; latter, etc. One cannot apply simple soil tests without at least a general knowledge of the range of the important parameters of the soils to which the soil test results are to apply. In the more restricted sense and the commonly understood one, soil testing consists of some biologi

The sustainable production of food is the first pillar of food security, and millions of women farmers work as formers, and natural resources managers. In doing so, they contribute to national agricultural output, maintenance of the environment and family food security (Onyemibi, 2000).
According to Nnadozie and Ibe (2006) women play a very significant role in Nigeria Agricultural production, processing and utilization. Agricultural Extension Personnel are very important in the development of agriculture. They utilize strategic vital agriculture information for the individual and general improvement of the farmers, homemakers and youths. This could be in the area of their family technique, family nutrition, and community development. Therefore, according to Nnadozie and Ibe (2006) the integration of women in extension is essential for the achievement of some goals such as increase food production, food self-sufficiency and sustained reduction of poverty and mal-nutrition.
The participation of women in agriculture has attracted greater attention in recent times over the years. In the past two or three decades, considerable research has been done on gender-related issues in Nigerian agriculture. These have had some effect on policy formulation and programme including perhaps the creation of women-in-agriculture (WIA) unit in several states and federal government ministries of agriculture and the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP’s). It is however, difficult to measur

The study attempts to investigate the level of awareness, access and relevance of information and communication technology (ICT) tools among cassava farmers in Osun State, Nigeria. Data were gathered through a survey interview scheduled on a total of 130 cassava farmers. The data were analyzed using frequency, mean, standard deviation, Spearman rho correlation and independent sampled t-test. The result revealed that, the mean age of the respondents was 45.3 years and mean years of farming experience of 17.7 years. Radio, television, video recorder, audio cassette, mobile phone (GSM), computer and camera were categorized into high level of awareness and access. These ICT tools were also rated as highly relevant to cassava production activities in the area of cassava stem selection, land selection, land preparation, time of planting of cassava stem; and marketing of cassava produce. Based on the result of independent sampled t-test, there were significant differences in the mean scores of awareness and access to radio, television, computer, video and camera. These ICT tools were highly relevant to cassava production in the study area. Spearman Rho correlation analysis revealed that significant relationship exist between age (r = -0.434, p ≤ 0.05), cosmopoliteness (r = 0.276), p ≤ 0.05); Sex (r = -0.76, p ≤ 0.05), years of education (r = 0.328; ≤ 0.05) and accessibility to ICT. Sequel to the findings of the study, it was recommended that, the extension institutions in Nigeria sh

Agriculture is one of the most important sector of the Nigerian economy which accounts for about 42% of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and over 70% of non-oil exports. It provides over 80% of the food needs of the country. About 70% of Nigerians live in rural area, and 90% of these are engaged in agriculture. This implies that agriculture is a key sector that stands to affect majority of Nigerians positively (Okolo, 2004). Despite its high contribution to the overall economy, this sector has been seriously facing challenges of many factors of which climate-related disasters such as drought and floods are the major ones (Deressa, 2008). According to Udofia (2001), the frightening effects of climate variability on the entire environment has reached a global dimension. Although its effects and the ecological and economic consequences are well perceived, they appear not to have been given the serious attention they deserve.
Climate is defined as the statistical description interms of mean and variability of relevant quantities over a period ranging from months to thousands or millions of years. The classical period is 30yrs as defined by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO, 1992).These quantities are most often surface variables such as temperature, precipitation, and wind. The difference between climate and weather is that climate is what you expect while weather is what you get. The term climate variability denotes the natural characteristics of climate that

Nigeria is ranked as one of the world’s most vulnerable countries to the adverse effects of climate variability (World Bank 2010). Subsistence farmers suffer from climate variability related stresses in diverse ways. These include increased exposure to extreme climate variability events and conditions such as droughts, dry spells and floods. Given that agricultural production remains the main source of food and income for most rural communities, the increased risk of production failure associated with increased occurrence of extreme climate change condition poses a major threat to food security and poverty reduction. Adaptation of the agricultural sector to the adverse effects of climate variability is thus an important priority to protect and improve the livelihood of the farmers and to ensure food security (Bradshaw, Dolan, and Smith, 2004; Wang, Zerihum, and Feyen, 2009).
According to Egom (2006), the rural areas in Nigeria are characterized by poor social amenities, high poverty level, unplanned residential layout and other bottlenecks that impede farmers well being. Apart from these negative aspects, Okoye and Okpala (2010) opined that the rural area can be identified to have potentials such as better environmental quality, availability of prime lands, biodiversity, tourist site and indigenous or local knowledge.

African Traditional religion is the religion of the Africans. It is the culture, identity of the African people. African Traditional religion refers to the indigenous or autochthonous religion of the African people. It deals with their cosmology, ritual practices, symbols, arts, society and so on. Because religion is a way of life, it relates to culture and society and how it affects the world view of the African people (John Mbiti, 10).
