MUSIC PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS

The word composition has been defined etymologically as ‘putting together’ or combining parts or ingredients. Harper Collins Dictionary of Music n defined etymologically as “putting together” or combining parts or ingredients. Harper Cothins dictionary of Music (1972:86) defines it as the process of creating a musical work. Now! Man creates or composes music so as to express his feelings, ideas, beliefs and impression of events, incidents and the world around him. Composition is therefore, an art that is highly structured, highly planned, very intellectual, mathematical, even cold- blooded. Udoh(2006b), quoting Brindle submits that composition expertise, talent, and observance of implicit rules to ensure that music serves the function of its genre. Uzoigwe(1992) highlights that, Many composers all over the world have made conscious and unconscious efforts to draw on the folk materials of their people.(p.9), and divers forms of artistic approaches have preoccupied the mind of the contemporary composer. Nketia (1974) observes that whether it is Africa or Asia, Latin America or Europe, there seem to be wide spread consciousness among musicians that music reflect the intellectual environment of those who make it. In drawing attention to this trend, Nketia further observes that for historical and sociological reasons, the search for new idioms has been much more intensive in the western hemisphere and in those countries musically within its orbit. According to Nketia, highly techn

Since there is no limitation to the numbers of languages that exist in a community, the phenomenon of code switching is bound to occur which gives the language users of the speech community, the abilityto alternate between the available languages in their community. Muysken(2001:1) refers to code switching as the rapid succession of several languages in a single speech event. This definition shows that for a speaker to code switch, “several languages”must be involved which ranges from at least two languages and above, therefore, it takes a bilingual to alternate among the available languages in a speech community, while Weinreich(1953) refers to a bilingual people as those individuals that switch from one language to the other according to the appropriate changes in speech situation.

Overtime, motivation and satisfaction of workers on the job had been key to efficient and effective work attitude. In Nigerian schools, there is a general dearth of music teachers which has resulted in the employment of unqualified teachers to teach the subject, thereby helped in discouraging students through inefficient teaching. Nigeria as a developing country is concerned on educating her citizens to suit her manpower needs and to meet the needs of the ever-changing world. It is observed that when the student is unsuccessful, much blame is usually leveled on the teacher. Music teaching/ learning at this level needs a well-organized and serious motivating initiatives. Oftentimes, the music teachers are criticized because of the apparent inefficiencies in the school system, particularly when their students fail to perform academically. To make the teachers accountable, there must be a way of getting them involved in school policies, provide incentives that will make them motivated and satisfied on the job. Although, our case study of the Osiezi and Igwe festivals among the Owa people is largely exploratory. Since this research is hinged on indigenous art forms, especially the oral variety. During these festivals, especially the Osiezi, the royalty is seen attempting to attain super-human appearance and image. First, the physical image of the King is elevated as he appears in special costumes, during the festival. Background of the Study The notion of ‘NNUNG ESSIEN’ or songbird in my locality. Songbirds are birds that have the capability of singing songs or mimicking sounds. In my area the typical songbird that is well known is Nnung Essien. A songbird means: A bird having a melodious song or call. A woman singer with a pleasing voice. A songbird is a bird belonging to the clade passeri of the perching birds (Passeriformes). Another name that is sometimes seen as a Latin oscen, “a songbird”. This group contains some 4,000 species found all over the world, in which the vocal organ typically is developed in such a way as to produce a diverse and elaborate bird song. Songbirds from one of the two major lineages of extant parching birds, the other being the Tyranni which are the most diverse in the Neotropics and absent from many parts of the world. These have a simpler syrinx musculature, and while their vocalizations are often just as complex and striking as those of songbirds, they are altogether more mechanical sounding. There is a third perching bird lineage, the Acanthisitti from New Zealand, of which only two species remain alive today. There is evidence to suggest that songbirds evolved 50 million years ago in the part of Gondwana that later became Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and Antarctica, before spreading around the world (Barker, F. K. Cibois, A. Schikler, PA. Feinstein, J & Cracraft, I. (2004). Phylogeny and diversification of the largest avian radiation. PNAS 101(3

The development of the Musical Instrument Digital Interference (MIDI) system has been a major catalyst in the recent unpredicted explosion of music technology. The MIDI provides new and time saving tools for music documentation. This work explores the MIDI and its prospects to the Nigerian setting as it concerns the use of modern technology to achieve proper documentation of Nigerian folk and popular music genres. Data for this study came from primary and secondary sources. Oral interviews and practical demonstrations served as the instruments of the primary source. Books, magazines, journals, and the Internet constituted the secondary sources. It was discovered that the Musical Instrument Digital Interference (MIDI) is a remarkable system that enables composers to manage quantities of complex information and allow synthesizers, computers, sound modules, drum machines and other electronic devices from many manufacturers to communicate with each other. The MIDI further enhances music notation, printing and publishing of folk and popular music styles and expressions hitherto limited oral traditions of transmission. The study concludes by offering useful recommendations as panacea for musicians, music lovers and indeed the art community.

Music is a general phenomenon that cuts across racial, cultural, social, educational, and economic barriers, which enhances cultural appreciation and awareness. Its symbol systems are important as letters and numbers. Music integrates mind, body, and spirit as well as provides opportunities for self-expression, bringing the inner world into the outer world of concrete reality, which in turn offers the avenue to "flow states" and peak experiences. It also creates a seamless connection between motivation, instruction, assessment, and practical application leading to "deep understanding." .Also Music makes it possible to experience processes from beginning to end, develop both independence, collaboration and thereby provide immediate feedback and opportunities for reflection. It makes it possible to use personal strengths in meaningful ways and to bring into understanding sometimes difficult abstractions through these strengths. It merges the learning of process and content thus improving academic achievement which results in enhancing test scores, attitudes, social skills, critical and creative thinking.

Throughout the ages, the primary objectives of education has been the transmission of a society’s modes of heritage – its heritage of ideas, beliefs, thoughts, values, forms of knowledge and skills as well as its work of art in the plastic, visual and sound media. This research project examines the worth of Igbo traditional music, with emphasison the folk songs of Ibagwa-Aka. It explores the general awareness of the customs and institutions of Ibagwa-Aka people, as well as their uses as a medium of instruction in the formal system of education.
