The objectives of this research are to demonstrate the process of applying perception of safety in an environment to actual crimes and to use the results to better implement safety improvements within the area. The focus of the research is the design on a college campus. University of Benin main campus was selected as a case study. The survey was developed and tested to better understand how people perceive their surroundings and to incorporate the findings of perception of safety to improve design and planning decisions for the UNIBEN campus. The criteria for a safe design was developed from research gathered on crime prevention and the psychological reactions of users to design features. The aim of this thesis is to enlighten designers on the subject of crime prevention and the perception of safety in design. Further research on the UNIBEN campus that leads to actual improvements of public safety is encouraged for persons involved in campus planning and maintenance. CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY Each year prospective and returning students flood university campuses all across Nigeria. From state universities to renowned private universities, students attend higher learning institutions to gain knowledge in various fields in hopes of a better future in the job market when he or she attains a degree. Institutions entice prospective students with glossy brochures that speak highly of the school’s academic programs. One topic that might not be mention

Construction materials are handled carelessly by members of the construction industry leading to increment in construction cost. As a result of this, material management has been identified as a critical component that improves productivity in construction projects. It is therefore imperative that construction companies involved in construction projects should understand the effects of proper. The aim of this study is to identify the root causes of ineffective material management and to itemize ways of achieving effective material management in Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. This study adopts a descriptive survey research design as well as simple stratified sampling technique to collect data from the study area. The generated data were analyzed using percentage and mean scores and presented in charts and tables. The findings from the analyzed data showed that the root causes of ineffective management are lack of communication between the clients and suppliers, unrealistic delivery date and incorrect type of material delivery as well as size of the material. The result also showed success levels in achieving effective material management. Based on the findings, this study, therefore recommends that site supervisors and management should adequately handle construction materials and more awareness should be given to the knowledge of material management on building projects.

Just as the society advances and the Nigerian population increases, there is an increasing number of aspiring students being admitted into tertiary institutions and little or no provision of adequate accommodation for them. This study examines ways of improving maintenance culture and its effect on quality of hostel properties in Nigerian institutions using University of Benin, Benin City, Edo state, Nigeria as a case study. The study employed the survey method. Data was collected from primary source using structured questionnaires which had closed ended questions. The questionnaire consisted of five sections. Section A dealt with the social characteristics of the respondents, Section B dealt with the respondents’ perception of hostel building maintenance, Section C dealt with the respondents’ view of the factors responsible for lack of hostel building maintenance, Section D aimed at capturing the respondents’ take on possible solutions to the maintenance issues, while Section E dealt with respondents’ idea of a well maintained hostel building and the changes it will cause. The study found that problems that militate against hostel maintenance include; lack of maintenance policy, inadequate provision of funds for maintenance, poor execution of maintenance work by designated responsible units/agencies, corruption, lack of experienced staff (human capacity building), misuse of facilities by occupants, Lack of timely response to maintenance request, over-crowding, change in gove

ABSTRACT “Market” is an area or setting in which architectural design of a farmers’ market price making forces (demand and supply) operates. Marketing performs the role of bridging special geographical gap by making sure that goods and services are moved from the point of production to the point of consumption. Agricultural marketing is an essential tool for development yet, farmers suffer from a number of difficulties that reduces their bargaining power, as they are deprived of getting the right price for their products. Data was sourced from a total of six cases, including three local and three Foreign. Architectural Data collected was analysed and used in the production of the Architectural design of a Farmer’s Market in Onitsha, Anambra State. Findings revealed that marketing involves several intermediary stages within the process. This often results in the consumer paying an exorbitant price and the producer receiving a lower price for his production. The marketing activity is obstructed by lack of sufficient fund, high cost of transportation, lacking market infrastructures, with little or no aid from government. Efficiency of marketing the crops was determined and problems identified through the movement of produce from producers, through the chain of actors in the markets. With the availability of a Place just for Agricultural produce marketing, there would be a reasonable encouragement to the farmers to display their produce, though they wouldn’t sell as vendors but t

Natural light is the essence from which all color reacts and takes existence. It’s the all important element in interior design/architecture. It provides a space with genuineness and without it a room can look unexciting, uninteresting and can feel repulsive. Sunlight is an elemental part of our existence and a fundamental component of green design. The purpose of this study is to use as much natural light as possible in designing a beauty and fashion centre to accomplish decrease in energy consumption, low costs, and requires less heating and cooling from the building. The research method adopted for this thesis was based on an in depth literature review and case study of other beauty and fashion centers. Day lit environments increase occupant productivity and comfort, and provide the mental and visual stimulation required to control human circadian rhythms. It also increases energy savings, increase revenue in retail applications. Second, several important factors ranging from design to installation and operation must be carefully addressed in order to realize these benefits. In conclusion a beauty salon and fashion centre can be designed as one single entity. Secondly site orientation and the building morphology are the first basic issues that affect the effective use of daylight in any interior space. Other components such as material use, shading device scheme and sizes of openings are basically used to control the amount and redirect daylight.

Road transport is a critical structure for economic development of a country. It influences the pace, structure and pattern of development. Nigeria has one of the largest road network in Africa. However, Road safety is an issue of national concern. Surge in population and motorization in the country along with expansion of road network contributes to the number of road accidents, injuries and fatalities. Road accidents create negative impact on the economy, public health and the general welfare of the people. Road accidents are human tragedy involving tremendous human suffering in terms of premature deaths, injuries and loss of productivity, etc. It is heartening that for the first time in two consecutive years, i.e. 2012 and 2013, there was decline in number of road accidents, the number of persons killed and the number of persons injured in road accidents. Road Accidents, deaths and injuries which occur each year need not happen. Significant reduction in accident rates is possible only by a wide variety of improvements in design of vehicles, operating environment and infrastructure, and enforcement of safety regulations and standards. The current issue includes various dimensions and magnitude of road accidents in India and brings into focus the challenges relating to the prevention of road accidents and their impact. The data and analysis on road accidents contained in this volume would help to create awareness and assist in decision making in the area of road safety. I
